What is trade tax?

Trade tax is a municipal tax in Germany that is paid by companies on their profits. It is one of the most important sources of income for cities and municipalities and is used to finance public services.

The trade tax assessment rate is a decisive factor in calculating trade tax. It is set individually by each municipality and determines how much tax is actually payable. This assessment rate must be at least 200% by law, but can be significantly higher depending on the municipality. The higher the assessment rate, the more trade tax a company pays. The trade tax assessment rate is therefore an important factor when companies choose a location.

In which cities in North Rhine-Westphalia is the trade tax rate low?

In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), trade tax rates vary significantly from municipality to municipality. As a result, some cities are considered veritable tax havens for companies.

Leverkusen, Monheim am Rhein, Langenfeld, Hückelhoven, Heek (Borken district), and Marl (Recklinghausen district) are currently considered advantageous due to a low trade tax rate of 250%. These cities deliberately set low rates in order to increase their attractiveness as business locations. It is therefore worth taking a look at the list of rates for companies making location decisions. Companies in these cities can often save half the trade tax compared to other cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
