The three-part office complex on Cologne’s city ring road was built in 1995 according to plans by the renowned Cologne architect Thomas van den Valentyn for Victoria Lebensversicherung AG. With a total area of approximately 25,000 m², the ensemble is one of the most significant office buildings of its era. The property was awarded the Cologne Architecture Prize in 2000 and is a listed building.
The Sachsenring Ensemble consists of three freestanding building sections as well as 167 parking spaces in a two-story underground garage. The amenities include a high-quality natural stone façade, several passenger elevators, room-by-room air conditioning via ceiling sails, a ventilation system, raised floors, and suspended ceilings. The three building structures—the Cone, the Second Tower, and the Wing—create unusual architectural perspectives based on their respective basic shapes: circle, square, and rectangle. A circular glass structure forms a striking entrance and defines the appearance of the entire complex on the Ring. All parts of the convection facade were optimized through thermal simulation; despite the extensive transparency of the glazing, a g-value of less than 0.1 was achieved—an outstanding figure for sustainable and energy-efficient operation.
