The Südstadt is part of the city center district. Geographically, the Südstadt is located in the southern part of Cologne's Neustadt-Süd district. However, it is not an independent administrative district.
This is an area also known as Veedel. It cannot be precisely defined, as the southern part of the city is not a cartographically defined area in Cologne's city structure.
Cologne's Südstadt combines everything that makes Cologne what it is. Long-established butchers, Turkish greengrocers, and genuine Cologne boys and girls. There are also many old buildings and historic walls, as well as modern new buildings.
The heart of the Südstadt is Chlodwigplatz. This is where the Altstadt-Süd and Neustadt-Süd meet. There are many small restaurants and pubs here that are perfect for lingering and relaxing on a beautiful summer evening. There are several cafés, tapas bars, and beer gardens near the square. The burger joint "Die fette Kuh" on Bonner Straße is very popular and is considered one of the best burger joints in Cologne.
During Cologne's fifth season, the southern part of the city becomes the center of carnival celebrations. Here, the people of Cologne celebrate carnival in the streets, in their favorite pubs, and parade through the city. The Rose Monday parade also starts at Chlodwigplatz.
