Cologne is undergoing a constant process of urban redevelopment: areas are being redeveloped or restructured and modernized. Old factory buildings are being converted into commercial spaces and apartments that meet the highest modern standards. Industry is being revitalized into industrial chic. This includes the Euroforum site, the former KHD site in Cologne-Mülheim!
How it all began
At the end of 2014, plans to redesign the former 10.1-hectare KHD site in Cologne-Mülheim took shape in the urban development committee. KHD stands for Deutz-Mülheimer Motorenproduktion, the Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG, which began producing four-stroke engines on the site in 1876. The site covers the area from Deutz-Mülheimer Straße to the north of the Zoobrücke and Mülheim harbor. At that time, gasoline engines from Daimler, Bugatti, and Maybach were manufactured on the former KHD site.
The dust and glamour of days long past
Today, the remains of the industrial boom are still visible on the large site: old factories, large factory buildings, and administrative buildings. A huge area that has long been unused and covered in the dust of days gone by. Now the KHD site is to be revitalized and brought back to life. Around 3,000 new apartments and commercial developments are to be built. New roads, squares, schools, and kindergartens are also planned for the site. This is no easy task for the city, investors, and architects, as the historic buildings are to be preserved as much as possible. The redesign of large factory buildings in particular poses an enormous challenge.
What happens next
The aim is to create a neighborhood with a good mix of residential, office, and service facilities. It has not yet been decided which investors will revitalize which parts of the Euroforum site, and the development plans are currently being finalized. So Cologne has an exciting time ahead of it on the "Schäl Sick"
