When the end of school approaches, the most frequently asked question is probably: "Do I want to do an apprenticeship, or would studying be better for me?" Most websites don't really help, as they just give you more suggestions, which rarely makes the decision any easier.
I was faced with the same question and was pretty clueless, but then I came across the dual study program and knew right away that was what I wanted to do.
What exactly is a dual study program?
In a nutshell, a dual study program combines theory and practice in your chosen field.
In my case, this was marketing and digital media. It was the diversity and growing presence of the media that led me to choose this field.
The only thing missing now is a practical partner, as you have 20 hours of classes per week at the university and work 20 hours per week in a company, where you can directly apply the theory you have learned. The search for a practical partner could be a little more difficult during the coronavirus pandemic. However, it is important not to lose motivation and commitment, which may be required a little more than usual.
Depending on the field of study, many companies are reluctant to hire new employees due to the risk of infection, which can prolong the search for a practical partner.
I, on the other hand, was lucky and found my perfect practical partner at Larbig & Mortag! I knew immediately that I would be able to put the theory I had learned to good use here and achieve a very good degree
The dual study program not only allows you to gain professional experience, but also to earn money alongside your studies, which is particularly helpful for many parents. Studying in a dual program is definitely a step towards independence, which is what many students hope for. You learn about new topics, work, and move if necessary. What more could you want!
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
- you gain initial professional experience | - greater effort required when applying for jobs |
- you earn money while studying | - difficult to drop out of the program, as you are bound by an employment contract |
- smaller learning groups at universities | - Commitment to a specific field of work due to professional experience |
Conclusion
The dual study program makes it easier to start your career right away because you already have work experience, so I would definitely recommend it. With good time management, you can still have plenty of free time during your studies. However, you should be aware that it often takes more time than a typical full-time degree program.
I am very happy with my decision to pursue a dual study program, because the hard work is balanced out by working at a company.
I definitely made the right choice with Larbig & Mortag as my practical training partner. Even during the interview, I realized that I would be working with a very friendly and accommodating team where I would immediately feel at home.
I know that I can put the theory I have learned to good use there and that I can always go to work with a smile on my face.
