The pandemic has been ongoing worldwide for a year now. During this time, many companies have switched to working from home, which continues to be the case in some instances.
Many businesses, such as restaurants, suffer from this because employees do not take their lunch breaks on site near their place of work, but mainly at home. One positive effect of working in an office is therefore that various service providers are located in the immediate vicinity of the company. These include, for example, restaurants that offer employees extra meals for lunch, retailers for everyday needs, and transport companies.
Around 30 percent of employees in Germany are currently still working from home instead of in the office, which means that the sectors affected have lost around 5.7 billion euros in revenue.
The reduced purchasing power of employees in the affected industries led to a decline of around 5.1 billion euros. However, there were also indirect effects such as lower energy consumption by hotels, restaurants, and many other public institutions. There is talk of a decline in revenue of around 4.1 billion euros.
Despite the slight recovery from the pandemic and the easing of restrictions, many companies are continuing to offer hybrid working arrangements. However, economic experts expect the dependent industries to recover in the coming years.
